MaryAnn Mooney Whorton, 76, died Monday, May 31, 2010, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.
She was born June 5, 1933, in Cushing, Okla., to Earl L. and Anna Glendenning Mooney. After her mother's death in 1942, she was raised by her stepmother, Roxie Lillian Grubbs Mooney. She attended Horace Mann Schools in Shawnee, Okla., before graduating from Bethel Acres High School near Shawnee in 1950. She then attended Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, graduated from Oklahoma A & M (later Oklahoma State University) in Stillwater, Okla., with a bachelor's degree in elementary education. She taught school in Perry, Shawnee and Forgan, Okla. She later obtained a master's degree in religious education from Southwest Baptist Theological University in Fort Worth, Texas, and also completed a master's degree in family relations and child development from Oklahoma State University.
Mrs. Whorton especially enjoyed growing and learning in the love of Jesus Christ. She enjoyed music, singing, painting, bird watching and finding beauty in all aspects of the world. Her great passion in life was her children and grandchildren.
On March 14, 1964, she married Dwight E. Whorton in Stillwater. They resided over the years in Norman and Dewey, Okla., before settling in Stillwater. She was a member of University Heights Baptist Church while in Stillwater. In 1987, they moved to McAlester, Okla., where they resided until 2001. During this time, she was a member of New Covenant Fellowship Church. In 2001, they relocated to Lakin, where she resided at High Plains Retirement Village Apartments and Long Term Care Unit. She also was active with Deerfield United Methodist Church in Deerfield.
Her husband died Oct. 31, 2002. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Patricia Jane; a brother, Glen Mooney; and two daughters, Deanna Jean and Mary Elizabeth.
Survivors include a daughter, Laura Lea, and her husband, Tommy, of Clayton, Okla.; a sister, Elizabeth, and her husband, Gene Unruh, of Deerfield; a sister-in-law, Sue Mooney of Fort Stockton, Texas; her grandchildren, including Jeromy Lane Alsip of Norman, Aaron Dean Alsip of McAlester, Heather LeAnne Whorton of Tulsa, Okla., and Garrett Michael Walker and Harley Sue Walker, both of Buffalo Valley, Okla.; four nieces; and one nephew.
Funeral is planned for Friday at Brumley Mills Funeral Home in McAlester, with burial to follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to The Gideon's International, in care of the funeral home.
